When a child is born into a marriage German law declares the husband of the mother as father of her child. Sometimes the so established paternity does not represent the biological paternity.

For children born out of wedlock paternity must be acknowledged or established by court. Before a declaration of paternity is recorded the father to be should inform himself about the consequences as well as his options to clarify the paternity.
